At the beginning of the week, President Ruto received extreme criticism and hate after he announced that he was building a Kshs1.2 billion church in the statehouse. Outside of being annoyed by his misplaced priorities, seeing that over 1 million youths in the country are jobless, many Christians had burning questions regarding this church. What would it be called? Who would be the serving clergy? And who would be the attendees of this massive church?
This whole conundrum got me thinking about how much the church has evolved over the years, and a few things stuck with me.
Back in 2021, when my mom had her first surgery to tackle atypical Meningioma, I remember feeling angry and feeling like she did not get the support she needed from her church. You see, my mother is an avid catholic, the ones who even host Jumuias. During these events, they make contributions to diverse events and call me entitled, but I thought, or maybe assumed, that they would help her with any sort of contribution just for financial support. However, that did not happen, and it was fine since she used insurance, and her medical bills were covered. What blew my mind was that during her recovery, she was asked to hold the Jumuia during which she was supposed to provide a financial contribution as a sign of gratitude for the members praying for her healing. I found this very wrong, but according to my mom—bless her heart—it was fine, and the good thing was that she came out of surgery successfully, and she wanted to show her gratitude.
What truly shocked me, though, was what happened after her recovery. The church asked her to host the next Jumuia, and in doing so, she was expected to make a financial contribution as a show of gratitude for their prayers. I found it unsettling. But my mother, ever gracious, thought it was okay. She had survived the surgery and wanted to express her thankfulness. Still, I couldn’t help but feel that something about the exchange was off.
My interest in this topic and how much capitalism has impacted the church was further fueled after a recent post I saw on X by a lady who was asking how it has become a thing that one could be in debt in church. (formerly Twitter). “When did we start having debts in church?” She explained how her friend had stopped attending church because she owed Ksh 5,000, and she had been publicly outed twice in church. Her story was followed by a thread of other X users providing their reasons for why they stopped going to church, all of which involved the church functioning as a business and ways to manipulate people.
One man shared that their pastor preached against materialism—claiming earthly things were worthless—while proudly driving a brand-new Range Rover. He even asked the congregation to contribute money for a full tank of fuel. Other women recalled absurd expectations from their churches, including mandatory family contributions of up to Ksh 73,000 and payments for “birthday blessings.”
Seriously, what has the church become?
All this reminded me of a running joke: When Jesus returns, he’ll find PCEA members still organizing harambees. It’s funny to think that this confirms that jokes and stereotypes are based on facts because most of the people who commented on these tweets.
Interestingly, this isn’t limited to one denomination. Many churches today seem to operate within a hierarchy, some even marketing themselves as exclusive places of worship for the elite. I mean, churches are using influencers on Instagram! So, is it a business, greed, manipulation, or just a way for churches to survive?
While I may not be in a position to answer this question, what I know is that this phenomenon has caused many people, particularly the youth, to steer away from the church. Why? Because I think the younger generation is more open-minded and does not quite fall for religious manipulation, and those who might, simply cannot afford these church memberships.
What I also know, is that religion is personal.
