A Tribute to My Dearest Mother

A Tribute to My Dearest Mother

My mother was perfect, and I am not just saying that because she is no longer here with us, but because that’s what she was and still is —PERFECT!

I am an only daughter, but I can never say that I don’t know what it feels like to have a sister. She played both roles so seamlessly. She knew exactly what to say and what not to say. And exactly what to do. She was my first and most reliable protector against bullying, and everyone I know said I joked too much with her, including casually referring to her as “WaMichael.” But that’s because she gave me room, and it is this that resulted in my favorite pictures with her. She was truly my friend, and I loved her so.

Losing mom feels like the biggest lie I have ever heard because how can it be true? How is it possible that this day has come? I have never been so heartbroken, and it is absolutely disgusting that life is going on seemingly per usual when I can’t see my mom. It has been two weeks now, and I still feel confused and cheated by life. What breaks my heart even more now is the feeling that all the confusion, pain, anger, and sadness I feel can only be resolved by talking to her. Yet, that’s the one thing that I can’t do.

Since her diagnosis, I saw her illness very selfishly steal her beauty and quality of life. But I never noticed her being less of a mother. She was still the most selfless mother and woman, and I sometimes hated it. Because I never understood how she could afford to come for a doctor’s appointment but always brought us milk, bananas, or chicken. I also remember her apologizing for being sick during Edwin’s wedding—as if it was her fault. During this day, she was also very joyful, and I could tease her like normal. Looking back, my mother was too good for this world.

Funny how she always said that good people always die first, while referring to other people, particularly her elder brother, who passed away before his time, because “Ona Ngai endete indo iria njega.” (Even God loves nice things.) To me, this always made me fear that He would take her too soon, like He has now, because she was truly an angel, and it’s unfortunate that she saw it like we did. But God did.

The righteous perish, and no one takes it to heart; the devout are taken away, and no one understands that the righteous are taken away to be spared.

Isaiah 57:1-2 NIV

My mom could be the best mother for each of her children, depending on where everyone was at and what they needed, and even celebrate the different wins of each. I remember when I was younger, realising that while my brothers and I got different grades during our KCSE results, my mother was equally overjoyed for each one of us, because she loved and appreciated each one with their different academic might. And as I grew older, I further realized that my mother had different relationships with each of her children, and I was wowed by just how amazing she was.

For my case, this meant supporting what I did, even when she never really understood what that was, and I really loved that about her. I remember telling her about this website, and she was fascinated. She was even the one who pushed for me to write the story of her illness and journey to get help. And when I did not want to post the picture of her with the swelling, which I deemed gruesome, she said that those were precisely the pictures to post, such that anyone with a similar problem would know where to turn to.

I also loved calling and telling her about something funny I saw or remembered. She was also my speed dial whenever I unlocked a parenting level that I had no idea how to deal with. One that required an actual mother-My mother. And now, every time I think of calling her, I am reminded that I can’t do that anymore, and it really breaks my heart. I have been told it gets better, and I hope it does. However, I also hope it doesn’t, because that means getting used to a life without my dearest mother.

But it is God’s will. And as hard as it is to accept, I must. We must. And my dad told me we are Christians, and as Christians, we don’t hope, we believe. So, I choose to believe it will get better. It is also my belief that there is life after death and heaven is real. Because no one belongs there more than my mother. She deserves a happily ever after where she is in no pain or living with the anxiety of upcoming medical appointments. A few months ago, she told me, “Onaniī mūthenya ūmwe nīgahona. Karīniī ngūtūra thiaga thibitarī. (I will also get better someday. I will not always go to the hospital.) I must admit that after her radiotherapy was successful, I thought she was indeed going to get better in this world. And I feel very robbed that she did not.

My mom truly left an unimaginable void in my life and that of my entire family. I hope and pray that there comes a day when I can remember her and write about how great a mother she was without feeling such excruciating pain that I can feel my heart literally crumble in my chest. Because, as of now, writing about her in the past tense is the hardest thing I have ever done. I still wish it to be a lie, but it’s not. And like my brother told me, we have a great dad. And we believe it will be fine.

And to my mother in heaven, please teach me how to pray. Because you taught us to believe in heaven, and now that I believe you’re there, I too want to make it to heaven. I don’t want the last time we talked to be the last. And you were right, there are benefits to being a good person. Because, despite all this pain, my favorite thing now is the realization that everyone knew what an amazing woman you were, and for those who don’t, I will make sure they do. May Our Good Lord bless and keep your soul, MY MOTHER.

Until We Meet Again.

Be strong, and I know you are. Things happen in the universe that we cannot comprehend. I do believe in God, and that the same God that took mum will take care of you. I lost my mum at age 12 and am this strong irregardless. Be strong.
